TradeMoves is an international trade and customs advisory firm based in Silver Spring, Maryland. At TradeMoves, we help clients plan and implement international trade strategies, provide advice and assistance on cross-border issues, develop sourcing and supply planning tools and resources tailored to the movement of products and materials, and educate governments on client trade policy priorities. As a small firm, TradeMoves is invested in the professional development of our employees. The position is designed to provide detailed exposure to trade, customs, and regulatory issues as well as opportunities to develop and build upon existing areas of interest as they relate to trade knowledge, skills, and abilities. Part-time status, with possibility to transition to full-time in the future. Ideal for a graduate student with a flexible schedule looking for work to complement classes related to trade and international commerce.

This position requires attention to detail; great organizational, research and analytical skills; ability to work well with others; and strong communication skills. 
 
Overview of Responsibilities: The selected candidate will support client projects and the TradeMoves team in providing high-quality deliverables specific to clients’ cross-border trade priorities. This is a research-focused position which requires high attention to detail; strong communication, organizational, research, and analytical skills; and ability to work well with others and independently. 
 
The following are typical responsibilities and assignments for this position, which may vary depending on client demands and work load:
  • Support cross-border supply chain projects including maintaining current tariff rates and import taxes related to movement of clients’ goods across national borders, primarily for the processed food sector and its suppliers
  • Conduct research on import requirements, customs issues, agriculture/food issues, regulatory measures, and trade policy issues of interest to clients, often in languages other than English.
  • Monitor proposed changes to cross-border policies and regulations by governments.
  • Draft communication in response to client inquiries and information requests in a timely manner.
  • Work with team to ensure all projects and daily workload are being completed and escalated to the project lead as needed.
  • Monitor and compile daily news related to clients’ cross-border trade concerns.
  • Draft submissions to US government agencies outlining clients’ priorities for US trade policy.
  • Data entry and contribution to in-house and client databases.
  • Support proposal development for potential projects.
  • Assist in managing the company’s accounts on LinkedIn and Twitter.
  • Draft and publish posts for team’s social media accounts including TradeMoves’ blog.
  • Provide preparation and on-site support for clients’ trade-related meetings/events, as needed.
  • Administrative tasks as needed to contribute to a small firm.
  • Other trade projects and assignments, as needed.
 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in international trade issues and concepts, and possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Tenaciousness to learn, exhaust available resources, and provide innovative solutions
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and coordinate work and deliverables often in tight deadlines
  • Reliable team member able to work on multiple tasks independently
  • Flexible and willing to adapt to a changing environment
  • Keen interest and proven ability to conduct extensive primary and secondary research (including data collection) on a wide range of products, markets, and trade impediments
  • Outstanding interpersonal and client-service skills
  • Demonstrated strong communication skills, both oral and in writing
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to think critically, and provide findings and supporting data
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite
  • In addition to English proficiency, foreign language skills preferred: Spanish, Arabic, and/or French
 
Desired Experience:
  • Master’s degree or pursuit of a Master’s degree with concentration in food science and safety, international trade, international commerce, government and foreign affairs, international policy, international economics, international affairs, or international relations; or
  • Bachelor’s degree with 1 - 2 years of experience in the field of customs, regulatory affairs, trade policy, or food science and safety.
  • Up to date on current cross-border trade issues, including US trade actions and countries’ countermeasures.
  • Familiarity with tariff classifications, the Harmonized Tariff System and experience with countries’ tariff schedules.
  • Working knowledge of free trade agreements, reduction schedules, market access chapters, rules of origin, quotas, standards of identity, microbiological criteria, and food additives.
  • Familiarity with non-tariff barriers affecting movement of raw materials, intermediate goods, and finished food products.
  • Interest/experience in info-graphic design, proposal development and project management for research deliverables, and understanding the needs of a small company.
 
Start Date and Location: Preferred start date in March 2019.  Office is located in downtown Silver Spring, 2.5 blocks from the Silver Spring Metro Station (red-line), with easy access to 14th Street and 16th Street bus lines.
