TradeMoves is currently seeking a part-time (20-25 hours/week) International Trade Intern to support client work. This position requires attention to detail, great organizational, research and analytical skills, and strong communication skills (written and verbal). TradeMoves internship is designed to provide the selected candidate with solid experience to develop and build on existing KSAs in trade, customs and regulatory issues.  Ideal for an undergraduate or graduate student with flexible schedule.

Overview of Responsibilities: The selected candidate will support client projects and support TradeMoves’ team in client services. This is a research-heavy position.  The following are typical responsibilities and assignments for this position, which may vary depending on client demands and work load: 
  • Support tariff management projects and maintain tariff rates and taxes related to movement of clients’ goods across borders.
  • Conduct research on import requirements, customs issues, agriculture / food issues, regulatory measures and trade policy issues of interest to clients.
  • Monitor proposed changes by governments to import requirements, standards of identity, customs issues, agriculture / food issues, regulatory measures and trade policy of interest to clients.
  • Draft communication in response to inquiries and information requests. 
  • Work with team to ensure all projects and daily workload are being completed and escalated to the project lead as needed. 
  • Data entry and oversight of in-house databases.
  • Other trade projects and assignments as needed.
 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  The ideal candidate will have a solid foundation in international trade issues and concepts, and possess the following KSAs:
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills. 
  • Strong ability to prioritize and coordinate work and deliverables often in tight deadlines. 
  • Strong team member able to work on multiple tasks.
  • Demonstrate an ability and desire to conduct extensive primary and secondary research (including data collection) on a wide range of products, markets, and trade impediments.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and client-service skills. 
  • Outstanding communication skills, both oral and in writing. 
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to think critically, provide findings and supporting data.
  • Foreign language skills preferred (Russian and/or Arabic particularly desirable).
 
Desired Experience:
  • Current undergraduate or graduate student with concentration in international trade, international commerce, government and foreign affairs, international policy, international economics, international affairs, or international relations. 
  • 1 - 2 years’ experience in the field of customs, regulatory affairs, or trade policy preferred.
  • Familiarity with trade issues affecting movement of raw materials, intermediate goods and finished food products, including SPS and TBT issues.
  • Familiarity with tariff classifications and the Harmonized Tariff System, and experience with countries’ tariff schedules. 
  • Working knowledge of free trade agreements, reduction schedules, market access chapters, rules of origin, and quotas.
Start Date and Location:  TradeMoves is looking to fill the intern position on or before 1 February 2016.  The internship will last through spring, with the possibility of an extension into the summer.  Our office is located in downtown Silver Spring, 2.5 blocks from the Silver Spring Metro Station (red-line).
